BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Cocoa Utilities participated in Eastern Florida State College’s annual Walk For Water event on Tuesday, March 22.

A few years ago, Eastern Florida State College started an annual event called Walk For Water. It’s an educational event, set around the United Nations World Water Day.

The event was canceled for the last couple of years, and it helps to call attention to the importance of conserving and protecting water. Nearly 2,300 people die every day from lack of safe water and many environmental and animal losses are occurring as a result of irresponsible water use.

Around the world millions of women and children walk an average of 3.5 miles a day carrying water for their families. To make this fact real for students, many carried buckets of water hand pumped out of Clearlake from the Student Center to the Planetarium and back. Those who completed the challenge received a prize.

Lowes and Keep Brevard Beautiful loaned the buckets. The path of the track and the area around the amphitheater had signs along the way with shocking statistics about water use, pollution and shortages.
