TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Friday that he intends to sign the bill recently passed by Florida lawmakers that bans abortion after 15 weeks.

Late Thursday evening, state senators voted 23-15 in favor of the legislation, which bans abortion if a doctor finds the gestational age of a fetus is more than 15 weeks.

“I think that protections are warranted, and I think that we’ll be able to sign that in short order,” said Gov. DeSantis during a news conference on Friday.

Exceptions will be allowed if the woman’s life is considered to be in danger or if the fetus is considered to have a “fatal fetal abnormality.”

The legislation is similar to the abortion law in Mississippi that the Supreme Court will be ruling on this summer.
