Starting your own business can be incredibly stressful, especially if you do not approach it in small steps. Small steps that take you from the beginning to the end. That first thought of wanting to open your own interior decorating business is where you need to start. Make sure that you are ready to put some time, and money, into your endeavor before going on to the steps.

Niche-You need to know what niche you will be working in. Interior decorating and design can be a big market. It is always better to zero in on one aspect that you want to specialize in and then go for it.

■ Name-You will want to work out a good name for your business. You will need to consider how it appears to your customers. It does not matter if the name that you want to use sounds cool to you, a person searching for an interior designer needs to know what your business does. So, if you specialize in painting and trims you do not want a name like “Rough Cut Designing.” That would give the impression that you design wood structures from scratch.

■ Structure-If you have not put any thought into the structure of your business now is the time. You will need to know if you are going to be a sole proprietor, have a partnership, limited liability company, or a corporation. Each of them has positive and negative aspects to them, so choose the way that works the best for you and go for it.

■ Business Plan-You will need to have detailed business plan drawn up. You can download some templates from the internet, or you can collaborate with a professional that can guide you through the process. You will need this to be able to even apply for business loans in Australia, so make sure it is done correctly, with as much detailed information as possible, from start to finish.

■ Legalities-You will need to register your business in the area that you are planning to work from. Check with your local law makers, but you will usually need to have a business name picked out. Some insurance that covers all your activities, and some places will require you to have business cards and a location that is within one of their sections. Check all the regulations and comply with them all before attempting to open the doors to the public.

■ Financials-You should open a bank account that is strictly for the business. It needs to be separate from any personal accounts that you have. It is also a promising idea to get a few credit cards in case you need them. Do not use them unless needed, except for a few small purchases that you can pay off completely every month. This is also the time to look into lenders that you want to go through. Use an online platform and let them do the leg work for you. All you will have to do after that is choose the lender that works best for you and your circumstances.

That is about all that there is to it. You need to realize though that interior designing is all about your knowledge and your connections. If you have not gone out and gotten some connections, it is time to do so. Without them your business will fail before you even get started.

You can go to seminars, training classes, or find some groups to chat with, even if they are online ones. Once you get your name out there, and people start to know and recognize your brand, you will be on your way to success.
