Palm Bay Fire Rescue Extinguish Brush Fire Following Vehicle Crash at ‘The Compound’

Palm Bay Fire Rescue crews extinguish brush fire caused by a vehicle crash at the Compound Saturday afternoon. According to officials, the brush fire was caused by a vehicle that lost control and ended up catching the grass on fire. First responders were quick to put out the fire and keep it from growing. Located in the southwestern area of Palm Bay, the area known as “The Compound” is an undeveloped area of 2,784 acres. BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Palm Bay Fire Rescue crews extinguish a brush fire caused by a vehicle crash at “The Compound” Saturday afternoon.

According to officials, the brush fire was caused by a vehicle that lost control and ended up catching the grass on fire. First responders were quick to put out the fire and keep it from growing.

There were no reported injuries to any citizens or firefighters, no houses were involved.

Located in the southwestern area of Palm Bay, the area known as “The Compound” is an undeveloped area of 2,784 acres. The area is a former General Development Corporation site, with development that began in the 1980s.

When GDC went bankrupt in 1991, development stalled and the land that makes up The Compound was liquidated. The Compound remains largely undeveloped aside from the roughly 200 miles of roadway installed by GDC. The City of Palm Bay owns the paved roadways.

The area known as The Compound is not zoned as a recreation area open to the public, and the area has been increasingly used, illegally, as a popular spot for recreational outdoor activities.

According to the City of Palm Bay, this misconception has led to an increase in illegal activity in the area.
