BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Lorie Wacaster will conduct the Brevard Community Chorus in their annual spring concert, with a program designed to refresh and renew the human spirit on Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of the King Center for the Performing Arts.

Accompanied by talented pianists and select players from the Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra, In Need of Music will feature the chorus in a diverse musical presentation.

Lending additional talent will be the voices of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy Youth Choir, under the direction of Joani Slawson.

As suggested by the concert title, In Need of Music is a testament to the healing nature of the song.

The audience will be treated to selections on this theme with works by the University of Central Florida Professor Emeritus, David Brunner, including the title song, “I am in Need of Music,” with lyrics by American poet, Elizabeth Bishop. Continuing the celebration of love and music is Neue Liebeslieder Waltzes by Johannes Brahms, an enjoyable work, extolling romantic love.

The Brevard Community Chorus will present In Need of Music on May 7 at the King Center in Melbourne. For ticket information, call 321-242-2219.

The program continues with favorite opera choruses, by composers Verdi and Bizet. Several songs by Gwyneth Walker comprise the final portion of the program, which aptly concludes with “The Day is Done.”

The youth singers will join their adult counterparts in several pieces and perform one separate selection. In addition, several works for the four-hand piano will demonstrate the proficiency of the accompanying musicians.

General admission tickets for In Need of Music are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and active military, and free for children or college students presenting valid student identification at the box office. Additional ticketing fees may apply. For more information, call 321-242-2219.

Wacaster has rehearsed the chorus during the sabbatical of Eastern Florida State College music professor, Dr. Robert E. Lamb, and will also lead the group in its concert performance.

In Need of Music is the first post-pandemic concert for the chorus, which helps explain the program title.

“Singers and other musicians know the healing power of music,” said Wacaster.

“During the last couple of years, making music together was the thing we all yearned for. I think the audience will find this concert to be a cool, refreshing drink for the soul.”

The Brevard Community Chorus accepts new members twice yearly and performs onstage at the King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne.

The auditioned, volunteer organization of community singers meets weekly for the purpose of rehearsing and performing the larger works of the choral repertoire.

Past performances include such works as Messiah by Händel, Gloria by Poulenc, Requiem by Mozart, Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms, and Carmina Burana by Orff.
