Fatal Crash in Cocoa Kills 19-Year-Old Merritt Island Man, One Person Injured

A fatal crash Thursday afternoon on US-1 in Cocoa claimed the life of a 19-year-old Merritt Island man, while injuring another in a single vehicle crash near Cocoa Boulevard.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – A fatal crash Thursday afternoon on US-1 in Cocoa claimed the life of a 19-year-old Merritt Island man, while injuring another in a single vehicle crash near Cocoa Boulevard.

Investigators say the crash happened around 3 p.m. when the driver, identified as a 19-year-old male, was heading southbound on US-1 and lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason.

After losing control of the vehicle, the driver struck a paved median then overcorrected, struck a curb and flipped the vehicle multiple times. The 2006 Subaru Impreza also struck a fence and a palm tree during the crash.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, also identified as a 19-year-old male, was taken to the Holmes Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

The crash still remains under investigation.
