BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – City of Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey presented the City Council’s Exceptional Citizen Award to longtime Florida Tech Athletic Director Bill Jurgens during the April 26 Melbourne City Council meeting.

“The Melbourne City Council created the Exceptional Citizen Award Program to recognize Melbourne residents whose volunteerism, service and dedication have made a significant contribution to the City of Melbourne,” said Alfrey.

As the athletic director of Florida Tech, the Melbourne native has guided FIT’s sports programs for the past 40 years – overseeing Florida Tech’s growth from seven varsity sports, to the 22 varsity sports and four national championships the school has today.

Jurgens started as the Panther’s rowing coach in 1969 after rowing for four years at Jacksonville University where he majored in biology.

After his college career, Jurgens almost immediately, and according to him unexpectedly, stepped into coaching.

Jurgens says rowing has always been his passion. “I love rowing, I probably spend a little time thinking about it every day,” he said.

Nominations for the Exceptional Citizen Award, who must be residents of the City of Melbourne, are considered by the City Council on a quarterly basis and recipients are invited to attend a City Council meeting to receive their award.

Please see the Exceptional Citizen Award Program page for more information about the program and to make a nomination.
