BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk aircrew rescued a man 69 miles east of Port Canaveral, Saturday, after his 22-foot sailing vessel became disabled.

The aircrew transferred the man to Holmes Regional Hospital for further evaluation.

“The individual was fortunate that a cruise ship was transiting the area and heard his VHF radio call in the middle of the night,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Molly M. Edwards, A U.S. Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville watchstander.

“Mariners who operate offshore are always encouraged to have a form of long-range communication or safety device as back-ups, such as a satellite phone or emergency position indicating radio beacon.”
