SHERIFF IVEY: “I want to reassure our community, our parents, our teachers, and the most precious of our citizens, our children, that our schools are extremely well protected by what I believe are the finest law enforcement officers and teachers in the country.”

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – As we all watch with disbelief and pain in our hearts the school shooting that took place last yesterday at Robb Elementary School, our agency offers its prayers to the families, the school staff, and the first responders who are all impacted by this senseless tragedy.

I know everyone has questions about what happened, and in time that information will be shared by the investigating agencies, for now though, I want to reassure our community, our parents, our teachers, and the most precious of our citizens, our children, that our schools are extremely well protected by what I believe are the finest law enforcement officers and teachers in the country.

Our Deputies, Police Officers, and School Guardians that are assigned to our schools, keep close watch over our children and campuses, and trust me when I tell you that they love their students, just as if they were their own.

Our Command Team is working to provide as much information to our school security personnel as possible about yesterday’s incident and we have also asked our patrol units throughout the county, to spend as much time as possible at our school campuses when not responding to calls for service.

Our goal, is to reassure our students, parents, and school faculty, through an increased presence, that our campuses are safe and sound and that we are watching to keep harm away.

I also want to thank the many citizens, retired military, and law enforcement officers who have volunteered their time since yesterday’s incident to help keep our schools safe. As I always say “it takes a community to protect a community,” and keeping our schools safe is all of our responsibility.

– Sheriff Wayne Ivey
