BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Officer Mike Fitzgerald was hired by the Cocoa Police Department in December of last year and recently completed the field training and evaluation program. He has been deployed for solo patrol on March 8.

Fitzgerald grew up in Sayreville, New Jersey. His grandfather was a Jersey City policeman and he had a big influence on him, which is why he always wanted to be a police officer.

Fitzgerald graduated from the police academy in 1988 and served with the East Brunswick, New Jersey Police Department for 25 years.

There, he served as a Patrol Officer, Narcotics Detective, Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor and Sniper on the SWAT team. He retired as a Patrol Sergeant in 2014 and moved to Florida.

Fitzgerald is married and has six children, his oldest son is following in his footsteps and is a police officer for the City of Philadelphia. He is most proud of his kids.

Fitzgerald has many hobbies, but he said his favorite is working with German Shepherds.

“I have trained working German Shepherds longer than I’ve been a police officer and have competed Nationally in tracking obedience and protection,” said Fitzgerald.

“I attended the Cocoa Police K-9 competition and was very impressed with the dogs and handlers. When I saw Cocoa was hiring I applied and was fortunate to be given the opportunity to serve again in the City of Cocoa.”

Cocoa Police Department officials said they are excited to have Fitzgerald on their team serving with Bravo Squad.

“If you see him out and about make sure you show him some love.”
