BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Being a scholar-athlete at Florida Tech takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to excel both in the classroom and on the field.
In this Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, we are featuring Florida Tech women’s lacrosse player, Millie Hurt. This summer, the Manchester, England native is gaining meaningful experience at an internship in her desired field.
We caught up with Hurt to learn more about the incredible opportunity.
■ What company are you interning for this summer? What was your title and role with the company?
I am currently interning at SCIEX, a biotechnology company in a marketing communications specialist role.
I am involved in executing strategic marketing programs in PPC campaigns and recreating web pages to improve engagement.
I’m also in charge of the news section for the Food and Environment vertical ensuring each week current articles are reposted to boost interactions.
■ What drew you to this internship?
I was very interested in this internship because it combined my passion for science and my interest in strategic marketing creating an intriguing role for me to pursue.
■ What are some exciting tasks that you have been able to be a part of?
I have had the privilege of listening in on important board meetings discussing budget, improvements, and goals for each month.
I have gained a real-world perspective of how companies learn through their successes and weaknesses to create higher aspirations and targets for the next campaign.
■ How is your internship preparing you for a career you would like to do after graduation?
My internship is in marketing focused which is providing me with unparalleled experience in the business side of the science field, which is something that has always intrigued me.
■ What is your major at Florida Tech? Why did you choose this direction for your education and is this something you always wanted to pursue?
My major is Biochemistry. I have always had a passion for science, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after college. Recently, I researched non-lab-based positions and expanded into the marketing world in a biochemistry setting.
My education in Biochemistry stimulates me to think strategically based on quantitative and qualitative data.
This is something that is vital in the marketing field when developing campaigns.
■ How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for the work you are currently doing? What traits did you take away from the playing field that is helping you throughout your internship?
I must manage my time effectively to ensure that different projects I am working on are completed within the deadlines to a high standard.
The art of time management has stemmed from balancing lacrosse practice, lift, and games alongside my studies. Being a member of the lacrosse team has helped my teamwork skills directly. I also have found that perseverance with my projects has stemmed from lacrosse.
■ What skills did you acquire at the internship that you plan to bring back to help lead the women’s lacrosse team?
I have had to present my ideas confidently to my work team which I will use to help lead the lacrosse team and encourage younger players to speak up. I have also found how key active listening is and I will implement my acquired skills in the lacrosse team environment.
■ What advice would you give another athlete/prospective athlete who is looking to pursue the path you’ve taken?
I would say to be open to any opportunity you get and reach out to people because you never know who can help!
