Pedestrian On Motorized Wheelchair and K9 Companion Killed in Vehicle Crash in Melbourne

A pedestrian on a motorized wheelchair and their canine companion were killed in a vehicle crash Saturday that involved a 2018 Kia Niro on Lake Washington Road and North Wickham Road. Cmdr. Renkens identified the victim as 74-year-old Mary Tuck of Melbourne.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A pedestrian on a motorized wheelchair and their canine companion were killed in a vehicle crash Saturday that involved a 2018 Kia Niro on Lake Washington Road and North Wickham Road.

According to Melbourne Police Cmdr. Mark Renkens, upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the pedestrian had sustained life-threatening injuries and a canine she was with had succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Cmdr. Renkens identified the victim as 74-year-old Mary Tuck of Melbourne.

“The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital by Brevard County Fire Rescue where she ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash,” said Cmdr. Renkens.

“Initial investigation reveals the pedestrian was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of North Wickham Road, just north of the intersection of Lake Washington Road and North Wickham Road, when she traveled into the path of the northbound Kia Niro and was struck.”

Cmdr. Renkens said the investigation is ongoing to determine if alcohol, drugs, or a medical episode were a factor in this crash.
