PETER CRANIS: June Tourist Development Tax Comes in at $2.045 Million – a Record for the Month

5th consecutive month of 'best ever' results

PETER CRANIS: June Tourist Development Tax (TDT) has come in at $2.045 million – a record for the month of June, making it the 15th consecutive month of “best month ever” results. This is 9.3% ahead of the previous high June, which was $1.871 million last year.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – June Tourist Development Tax has come in at $2.045 million – a record for the month of June, making it the 15th consecutive month of “best month ever” results. This is 9.3% ahead of the previous high June, which was $1.871 million last year.

June is the kickoff of summer, so it bodes well for our summer numbers. Year to date, we are at $17.64 million (exceeding our total collection from 2020-21), compared to $12.05 million the prior year (up 46.4%) and $12.3 million in 2018/19 (up 43.5%).

This makes it the strongest nine months in any year by over $5 million and the strongest first six months of the calendar year we have ever had ($13.25 million compared to $9.5 million last year).

Looking at the tourist development tax by type, hotels represented 66% of the total for the month and vacation rentals were 33% of tourist development tax which typically has been around that range. In terms of hotel/motel revenue by city, Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral (35%) were, as usual, ahead of Melbourne and the Beaches (28%) as a percentage of the total.

This shows a slight upward trend for Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral which could be due to the stronger numbers of cruise passengers going out of Port Canaveral.

Looking ahead to July, we believe that will also be a record for that month (a high of $2.1 million last year) and traditionally has exceeded June numbers. If that occurs, we are well on our way to the best summer we have ever had. The previous summer (June, July and August) combined last year for $5.38 million in tourist development tax. So it looks very possible.
