BREVARD COUNTY • SUNTREE, FLORIDA – The impressive pipe organ at Advent Lutheran Church will get a summertime workout under the skilled hands of Dr. Samuel Backman during a free public concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 28.

Advent Lutheran Church is located at 7550 North Wickham Road.

The Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Backman will play the A.E. Schlueter organ of 2,196 pipes in the first concert of the church’s 2022-22 season, performing a program of diverse works.

The audience will hear classical works by Elgar and J.S. Bach, in addition to several of Backman’s own arrangements.

These stylings include English Folk Song Suite by Vaughan Williams, “Litany for All Souls” by Schubert, and four dances from Terpsichore by Michael Praetorius. Backman’s arrangement of John Philip Sousa’s rousing “The Washington Post” march will serve as the program’s finale.

Dr. Backman currently serves as Director of Sacred Music at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he chairs a multi-faceted music program across three campuses, functioning as principal organist and conductor of the Holy Cross Choir, St. Helena Singers, and Tenebrae Choir.

His undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate degrees in music were obtained from Saint Olaf College (B.M.), the Yale School of Music (M.M.), and the University of Oklahoma, (D.M.A.), respectively.

An active performer, Dr. Backman has been featured as an organ recitalist for conferences hosted by the American Guild of Organists and the Church Music Association of America.

He has also been featured on Pipedreams, a National Public Radio Broadcast program showcasing stirring pipe organ performances.

Choir director and organist for Advent Lutheran Church, Betty Jo Couch is delighted to welcome the Minnesota musician to Suntree to participate in the church’s concert series.

“I am really excited about this program, which has something for everyone! Sam has even included a Sousa march, which is definitely a crowd-pleaser,” said Ms. Couch.

“We are very happy to present the accomplished Dr. Backman in the first concert of our 2022-23 season.”
