From Author to Radio Personality: An interview with Davonte Walker

Radio is a powerful medium and its 3 billion global weekly listeners can attest to its impact. Radio has the ability to influence and empower through its content and this has been demonstrated by a recent academic article. This article investigated the role which radio programming played in the empowerment and nutrition of people in Malawi.

The academics noted that radio programming had a high impact on the empowerment of older women as well as having a high impact across many demographics for nutritional advice. As a result of the power of the medium, Davonte Walker is using his platform on the radio to provide a space for artists and entrepreneurs to share their work with the world. 

Walker is an established radio personality, entrepreneur, journalist and author. His primary focus is on his radio show, the Dwalk Show in which he interviews artists and entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurs which he interviews are predominantly those working in the fashion industry and those debuting fashion lines.

He also features the products of the artists and entrepreneurs which he interviews at his own business, Shops in Saginaw. In this way Walker is empowering the people and businesses in his community. Additionally, Walker also hosts several in person events where he also features some of the artists which he interviews on his show. 

Walker has also engaged in other pursuits such as writing and journalism. He has published an inspirational work of fiction titled, From the Ground Up which he wrote with the purpose of helping others to “level up”. Additionally, he was recently added to the news team at The Flint Courier News where he interviews artists and entrepreneurs.

He has achieved success in every avenue which his career has taken and is likely to continue doing so. We recently interviewed him about his career and his various projects and found out more about his life and his work. 

Interview with Davonte Walker 

What inspired you to get into radio? 

Walker: Me seeing people with talent not having a real platform to express themselves. People have interesting lives.

Who have you enjoyed interviewing the most? 

Walker: I enjoy interviewing artists, clothing lines and entrepreneurs the most. I don’t have a specific favorite though. 

How do you prepare yourself for interviews? 

Walker: I pray before every interview. 

What made you decide to write, From The Ground Up? 

Walker: I am a person that didn’t have a lot growing up but now I’m leveling up and reaching goals. The process of leveling up is so interesting to me. As a side note, From the ground up is a fictional story, it’s not about my real life. 

What impact do you hope to have as a journalist? 

Walker: As a journalist I want to help artists, entrepreneurs, businesses etc develop, prosper and get out there to as many people as possible.

Is there anything you would like to change about the radio industry? 

Walker: I would like for the radio industry to expand out to the internet more because social media is competing with radio. 

Where would you like to see yourself in the future?  

Walker: I see my radio show being known world wide and I see me possibly having a TV Show. 

How have you grown as an entrepreneur?

Walker: I have grown a lot since I became an entrepreneur. Sometimes I shock myself because of my knowledge on business. 

Is there any advice you would give to aspiring radio personalities?

Walker: I would tell them to stay focused and invest in yourself and your dreams.

Davonte Walker is an entrepreneur and an entertainer and he has achieved success in the wide variety of fields which he has entered. His inspiration for getting into radio came from him noticing a lack of exposure for talent in his community.

This has led him to the radio show which he has today in which he provides exposure to those who deserve it but may not necessarily be able to acquire it. Additionally, Walker expresses that anyone wishing to follow in his footsteps and become successful in radio should be aware that they will need to push themselves and stay focused while also focusing on their dreams.
