WATCH: Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Brevard Public Schools Board Chair Matt Susin and State Attorney Phil Archer detailed a new plan to deal with disruptive classroom environments that distract BPS teachers and students.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Brevard Public Schools Board Chair Matt Susin and State Attorney Phil Archer detailed a new plan to deal with disruptive classroom environments that distract BPS teachers and students.

“I am joined by several of our partners, who all share the same goal…keeping our Brevard Public Schools safe,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“Not only safe from active shooters, intruders, and other potential threats to our campuses, but also from the clowns who continually disrupt our classrooms and our assemblies with bad behavior, violent acts, and even cellphones, that disrupt class room environments and distract our incredible teachers.”

Sheriff Ivey said the failure of the current Brevard Public Schools discipline policy has been a major obstacle to student learning.

“Folks my team, our teachers, our administrators, and the overwhelming majority of students on our campuses are sick and tired of the disruptive behavior of a few clowns on each campus that can’t follow the rules,” said Sheriff Ivey.

Sheriff Ivey went on to say:

“A few clowns that can’t follow the rules and as a result keep others from learning. Even worse, our teachers and our principals are powerless to do anything about it as they have been stripped of their ability to hold bad kids accountable. Our teachers have been handcuffed when it comes to having order in their classrooms and can’t even teach anymore, because of the same students that are disrupting their classrooms over and over again.

“They write them up and the principal sends them right back to the classroom because guess what…their hands are tied too. What if I told you that a principal or a dean of one of our schools is not allowed to facilitate discipline on a student, unless it has been signed off on by three ladies who aren’t even on the campus, but instead are housed at the School Admin Building.

“What if I told you that we are losing teachers in mass because they are being physically and verbally attacked by disruptive students that aren’t worried about being booted out of school, held accountable, or like in the old days, having the cheek of their ass torn off by a school administrator for their disruptive behavior and outbursts. I can honestly tell you that this is happening as not long ago I witnessed it first hand and saw the frustration in our teachers faces during an anti-bullying assembly that the Sheriff’s Office sponsored.

“Folks, we have to get to these kids before they get to us here at this jail, and we need to return to the true discipline policy that unhandcuffs our teachers and our administrators so that they can hold these kids accountable. So starting right now things are gonna change as we are all partner together to send a resounding message, that if you can’t behave in our classrooms you won’t be in our classrooms.

“Trust me when I tell you…it’s a brand new day, so if your kid is a good kid, that’s coming to school to learn, to play sports, to learn the arts, and to have fun, starting right now we are taking steps to make certain that they have the perfect learning environment to do just that.

“If you are a teacher that is passionate about teaching children and are sick and tired of trying to do it in an environment where you are physically and verbally threatened or subjected to constant childish outbursts, then starting today, your prayers have been answered, because all of us have had enough of this crap as well.

“If you are a bus driver, a custodian, a librarian, or even a volunteer in one of our classrooms and you are tired of the same kids biting you, kicking you, and punching you, with no action being taken by the school, then get ready to see a change.

“And lastly, I want my message to be perfectly clear…if you are a little snot that is coming to our schools each and every day acting like a clown, while destroying the safe and peaceful learning environment other students deserve, then you can get ready to have a bad day. And if you keep it up, you won’t be attending our schools and if you aren’t careful you’ll end up in the school of hard knocks that is directly behind me.”

Sheriff Ivey said to put things in to perspective of just how bad they have gotten, just a few months ago Delores Varney the President for Ten/Ten Bus Drivers and Custodian’s Union came and met with the BCSO team to ask “self-defense” instruction as it has become dangerous in the classrooms, the hallways, and even the buses.

“Our schools are going to be great and safe learning environments where our teachers are able to teach again and not have their classrooms disrupted by clowns,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“Our principles are going to be re-empowered and once again given the ability to hold kids accountable for their actions. Our principals are going to have the ability to work with parents to make sure that these kids are doing exactly what they should be doing to get them back on the right path.

“And our principals are also going to be held accountable themselves, if they don’t use the new discipline policy to hold students who can’t follow simple rules accountable for their actions. Bottom line, all of us are committed to making Brevard Public Schools the safest learning environment in the country and you are either part of the problem or you are part of the solution.”
