How I’m Taking Better Care of My Appearance – and How You Can, Too

By  //  January 20, 2023

I never used to care about my appearance.

You’ve probably met a few people who were like me: always wearing baggy clothes, keeping a scruffy beard, and neglecting to spend time tweaking the finer aspects of the way I looked.

One day, a close friend brought up how drab I looked. This made me realize that people who put more effort into their looks tend to be happier and feel better about themselves. I decided to make a change and started looking into what I could realistically do. I went through all of the usual suspects—GQ, Men’s Vogue, and morefor tips and tricks.

Here are some of the things I took to heart and found to be the most useful!

Add More Suits to Your Closet

Men look good in suits—at least, that’s what I’ve learned from these magazines! Before, I felt like suits were constraining, and falsely believed that only businessmen wore black and navy blazers with dress pants and button-down shirts. Suits simply seemed too formal.

As it turns out, formal suits aren’t the only kind! Now, when I think of someone in a suit, I picture a man in a sports jacket and a pair of chinos. A simple gray blazer over a t-shirt works well, too, as does an overcoat paired with a blazer and trousers.

I’ve decided to try on different suits and style them to my liking. I don’t want to fill my whole closet with them, but I’m going to buy more slacks and sports coats. I think every guy should try this out!

Now, Add Color

I used to think that professionals only wore monochromatic clothes, but I’ve realized that anyone can throw a splash of color into their style and make it work. Instead of a black suit, try salmon or white to leave a longer-lasting impression. A perfect example of a man who plays with these sorts of looks is actor Timothée Chalamet, who frequently wears colored suits.

Even in a serious environment, traces of color can make you stand out. Bright ties and patterned pocket squares can highlight you in a fresh way that makes others happy to see you.

Something I’ve learned is that, if you continuously wear dark colors, you will often seem boring or uninterested. Drabness works against you and prevents you from making an impactful statement. So, try out something a little more vibrant and see where it takes you!

Take More Pride in Your Looks

Even if it’s shallow to say, looks matter. Your appearance is your pride, and if you don’t take care of it, you’ll begin to lose self-esteem. Simply put, when you look good, you feel good!

A lot of people care for their appearance through facial rejuvenation, which is the key to healthier and more youthful skin. We are always fighting an uphill battle against aging, and sometimes, you just need a little boost, whether it be through Botox, fillers, microdermabrasion, or something more dramatic, like a facelift for men.

Everyone has their own way of looking good, which brings me to my next important point.

Fitness and Health to Feel Good

When it comes to caring for yourself, health and fitness are paramount. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, figuring out how to slim your waistline, or simply making sure that your lifestyle isn’t sedentary, you should always prioritize proper fitness and nutrition. Paying attention to your body’s needs not only helps you look better but makes you feel like a million bucks.

People who routinely work out appreciate themselves more. This is largely because working out is an easy way to blow off steam and get rid of stress. If you’re not a big fan of strenuous exercise, you could always go on a strict diet or cut out processed foods.

Whatever your approach to health and fitness, as long as you’re actively trying to improve yourself, you’re doing something right. So, what will you do to make your life better?
