BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – The Palm Bay Police Department has honored Ken Nye as the 2022 VCOP of the year.
This award is voted on by the volunteers themselves and indicates the high regard held by Ken’s peers. This year, seven VCOPs were nominated.
A VCOP since 2019, Ken can be found volunteering at the police department several days a week.
Whether conducting his assigned 4-hour patrols, filling in for absent volunteers, or managing the radar/sign trailers (handled 40+ deployments in 2022), Ken is always the first to ask, “what can I help you with?”
He has provided traffic control support for parades and festivals, responded to call-outs, assisted with vehicle transports (as far away as Jupiter), and was certified as a crossing guard to replace officers. In a pinch, he even fills in at the front desk.
After snowbirding from New York for a few years, his many trips here to Florida convinced him to move to Palm Bay permanently in 2005.
Ken is an avid Buffalo Bills fan, and during football season can be found at Bennigan’s, where an area is reserved for Bills fans to celebrate together.
If you would like to become a VCOP like Ken, send an email to VCOP@palmbayflorida.org or call 321-953-8987.
