Florida Tech Panthers Swim Team Breaks School Record at the Sunshine State Championship Tournament

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Florida Tech men’s and women’s swim teams competed in day two of the Sunshine State Conference Championships on Thursday, February 16, which saw the 200 IM, 50 Free, and 1000 Free prelims, B-Finals and A-Finals all take place along with the 200 Medley Relays.

The biggest news of the meet came as the team of Christina Ramirez, Shaelyn Rutta, Nicole Rautenberg and Harper Powell broke the school’s record in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:45.35.

The previous school record was set in 2018 with a time of 1.45:53.

The teams finished with this time and placed fifth in the A final at the SSC Championships.

The second Florida Tech team swimming in the 200 Medley Relay of Rylee Nepple, Reegan Tiltmann, Sophia Sichtnik, and Debora Xavier took home fifth in the 200 Medley Relay B-Final with a time of 1:47.78.

In the men’s 200 Medley Relay, the team of Daniel Aizenberg, Connor Orth, John Fonnotto, and Max Martino finished fourth in the A-Final with a time of 1:28.81.

The team of Colin Goddard, Colby Garthwaite, Reston Bartlett, and Joao Nasciemento finished fifth in the 200 MR B-Final with a time of 1:38.53.

■ 50 Yard Free

Harper Powell of the women’s team finished in third place in the B-Finals of the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 23.86 at Thursday’s SSC Championship meet.

For the men, Max Martino took home fourth in the B-finals in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 20.67.

■ 1000 Yard Freestyle

For the men’s 1000 Yard Free, David Armstrong and Gavin Lanka competed in the event for Florida Tech.

Armstrong had the Panther’s best finish in 12th place with a time of 9:37.35 while Lanka came in 15th place with a time of 9:40.01.

Five women took place in the 1000 Yard freestyle for Tech. Kate Helminiak recorded the team’s best time at the meet with a 15th-place finish and time of 10:31.84.

Right behind her was Kiera Ceely in 16th place with a time of 10:33.25. in 21st place, Margaret Eure swam a time of 10:48.62. in 25th place at the meet was Leah Fonnotto who recorded a time of 11:02.01 with Emma Keegan closely behind her in 28th place with a time of 11:20.70.

Up Next: Day Three will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday with the prelims for the 100 Fly, 400 I’m an 200 Free, followed by the finals beginning at 6 P.M which will feature the three mentioned prelims finals followed by the 400 Medley Relays.
