BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Being a scholar-athlete at Florida Tech takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to excel both in the classroom and on the field. In this Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, we are featuring Panther women’s lacrosse player Jennie Boyle, a junior who is majoring in Chemical Engineering.

A transfer from Division I Manhattan College, Boyle recorded 33 goals, seven assists, 28 ground balls, 12 caused turnovers and seven draw controls during her first season with the Crimson and Gray in 2022.

Following the conclusion of the 2022 season, Jennie was named to the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner’s and Florida Tech Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

With women’s lacrosse beginning their season tonight at home against Flagler, we sat down with Jennie to ask her what she’s enjoyed about her time at Florida Tech so far and what she expects of the upcoming season.

■ What’s your major at Florida Tech and why did you choose this? Is it something that you’ve always wanted to do?

My major is chemical engineering. It’s not something I’ve always wanted to do, I picked it late in high school. I’ve always been interested in chemistry, it was my favorite science and I’ve always been more science-focused than English.

My family kind of pushed me into it, and I’m really glad that they did because I’m really enjoying it so far.

■ What was it about Florida Tech that drew you here?

Coming from a school in the north, I definitely love the weather in Florida! It’s the perfect balance of academics and athletics too.

■ How do you plan to use your degree after graduation?

I plan to get a job after graduation hopefully in the pharmaceutical industry is what I’m interested in.

■ What are some of the exciting projects that you’ve been able to work on in classes here?

I’ve enjoyed that the classes are really small and this past fall I had the chance to work in a group on a plant-design project. That was really cool because we went through all the steps of designing the plant from the layout of it to all the materials and then of course, the engineering aspects and all the calculations involved.

■ Your season starts almost immediately after you return to school, how do you keep everything balanced once the season starts?

I think mostly just taking the time at lacrosse and using it as an outlet to get two hours, completely get your mind off school and just focus on being with your teammates and it really is like a mood booster.

Once you get home you have so much more energy to focus on your schoolwork and throughout the day as well just knowing you have something to look forward to.

■ How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for what you’re doing now and what do you take from the field that you apply to your studies?

The obvious being time management but also getting along with people. I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many people that are different, that have different personality styles than me and it helps me work better with my classmates.

■ What advice would you give to an athlete coming to Florida Tech that has an interest in Chemical Engineering?

I would say get everything done as early as possible so your junior and senior years have more of a lighter load. So if you were playing a sport, you could focus more on your sport then.

■ What have you enjoyed the most about your time at Florida Tech and with the women’s lacrosse program?

My favorite part about Florida Tech and the women’s lacrosse program is definitely the competitiveness of the program and the conference that we’re in. Getting to play so many great teams in SSC is awesome.

■ What expectations do you have for yourself and for the team in the 2023 season?

Our biggest expectation is to be playing April 30th for our conference championship. We plan on everything that we’re working on now we’ll get us there playing in the end of April.
