Brevard Sheriff Wayne Ivey: No Hugs for Thugs! How Many Times Does a Felon Get Before They Actually Go to Prison?

By  //  March 27, 2023

Our community, like every community in the country, is being impacted by fentanyl overdose deaths

SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY: Can someone please tell me exactly how many times a person needs to be arrested and convicted of a felony before our criminal justice system actually sends them to prison where they can’t victimize anyone else? I’m sick of it folks…we go out and work our tails off to arrest them, and they are right back out on the street the following week robbing, burglarizing, assaulting, or selling drugs while preying upon the addictions of others for their own greed. BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Can someone please tell me exactly how many times a person needs to be arrested and convicted of a felony before our criminal justice system actually sends them to prison where they can’t victimize anyone else?

I’m sick of it folks…we go out and work our tails off to arrest them and they are right back out on the street the following week robbing, burglarizing, assaulting, or selling drugs while preying upon the addictions of others for their own greed.

Our community, like every community in the country, is being impacted by fentanyl overdose deaths, parents having to bury their children who overdosed on fentanyl, and our law enforcement officers being put at risk of fentanyl exposure each and every day!

Yet even with all of that, drug dealers like Brandon Owens are right back out on the street either on a ridiculous bond, on probation, on community service, or in some cases, a pinky promise to show back up in court, which of course, they never do.

Owens is only 30 years old and has over 17 felony charges and eight convictions as an adult and was once again arrested yesterday by Agents from our Special Investigations Unit for Trafficking in Fentanyl, Trafficking in Meth, Tampering With Evidence, Resisting Without Violence, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Owens had 57.3 grams of Methamphetamine and 20.6 grams of Fentanyl at the time of his arrest, which, if put into a lethal dose, is enough to kill over 10,000 of our citizens!!

Folks, this guy has prior felony convictions for everything from Possession With Intent To Sell, Probation Violation, Burglary, Attempted Robbery, and Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, and here he, once again, out on our streets with trafficking amounts of fentanyl and meth.

Not only did he have the drugs, but he also fled from Agents when they attempted to take him into custody on a Failure To Appear warrant, for guess what…Possession of Methamphetamine.

Well, apparently, he failed to understand that we chase drug dealers down in Brevard County, and no matter what kind of ridiculous sentence they may get in court, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is going to do our job and lock their butts up!

Well, I’ve had enough of this crap of repeat offenders and drug dealers getting a slap on the back of the hand and being put right back out on our streets to victimize someone else. Enough is enough. We, as a community, deserve better and, in fact, demand better as we are a nation built on law and order, not hugs for thugs!

Now I’m begging our Judges to hold these repeat offenders accountable for their actions by hammering them with the highest bond amount allowed by law, sentencing them to significant prison sentences, which is what they deserve, and to care as much about the rights of victims and law-abiding citizens, as they do the defendants before them!!

Brandon Owens is once again locked up at the Brevard County Jail and this time on “no bond”, so let’s see how long he stays there!!
