Eastern Florida State Women’s Basketball No. 2 Seed in NJCAA Division I National Tournament Set to Open Thursday

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College women’s basketball team is the No. 2 seed for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Lubbock, Texas set to open Thursday.

The Titans won the South Atlantic District title, defeating Northwest Florida State College 48-43 in the championship game in Niceville.

It was the first Region VIII and South Atlantic title in program history for the women’s basketball team.

Eastern Florida State College will open the national tournament on Thursday, March 23 against the winner of No. 15 Casper and No. 18 Walters State. Casper and Walters State will play on the first day of the tournament, Wednesday with the winner facing the Titans Thursday at 7 p.m.

“The team has earned it, we have played a really tough schedule and obviously our region is one of the top in the nation, so to come out of that against some really great coaches and great teams is special,” Eastern Florida State College head coach MJ Baker said.

“I am really proud of the team, we have come a long way.”

The sophomores led the way for the Titans in the Region VIII final as Leilani Guion scored 17 points and was named the tournament Most Outstanding Player while sophomores L’or Eyeba Mputu and Shadaria Smith both had strong tournaments and were named to the all-tournament team along with Elli Garnett.

Head coach MJ Baker has guided the Titans to a program-best 31-1 record this season and was named the Roonie Scovel Award, recognizing the FCSAA Coach of the Year on Saturday night.

The Titans are returning to the national tournament for the second straight season, also a program best after making it to the quarterfinals last season. Eastern Florida State College was also ranked No. 2 in the final national poll of the season and was the No. 1 seed in the Region 8 Tournament.
