BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Doctoral candidate Kodey Bogart ’22 MS was selected to receive the prestigious Dr. Tony Kern Professionalism in Aviation Award from the National Business Aviation Association.

Bogart, who is enrolled in Florida Tech’s AvD program, is CEO of KB Solutions Safety Management, an aviation consulting firm focusing on safety management system (SMS) development, implementation, regulatory guidance, and training.

Created in 2015, the award is named for Tony Kern, Ed.D., a retired U.S. Air Force pilot and leading authority on human factors training in aviation who is a founding partner and CEO of Convergent Performance.

The peer-nominated award recognizes individual pilots, maintenance technicians, flight attendants, dispatchers, and other aviation professionals who excel in leadership in the areas of professional ethics, vocational excellence, continuous improvement, professional engagement, professional image, and selflessness.

“NBAA is honored to recognize these individuals who embody the ideals outlined in Dr. Kern’s Integrated Model of Professionalism,” said Mark Larsen, CAM, NBAA director of safety and flight operations.

“Their dedication to excellence and their desire to promote safety in business aviation is inspiring for all in the industry.”

Florida Tech master’s student and aviation business owner Carl Bennett was a Kern Award recipient in 2021.

A former U.S. Army aviator and decorated Operation Iraqi Freedom combat veteran, Bogart has more than 2,500 hours of accident-free flight time in a variety of helicopters and has flown law enforcement and air ambulance missions, according to NBAA.

She has served as a flight safety advisor and instructor for a large training academy and is committed to working with the UAS community on understanding the importance of SMS.

“I want to make positive changes in the aviation industry,” she told NBAA.

She added, “A true professional is always looking for continued growth and knowledge. For me, it’s always been about picking up a book, reading journal articles, and getting more education. It’s important for all of us to get out of our bubble and learn as much as we can.”

The nominations are vetted by a panel of NBAA Safety Committee members.
