SOIRL Contributes $9.1 Million to Upgrade Nutrient Removal Process at Osprey Water Reclamation Plant in Titusville

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Save Our Indian River Lagoon program has partnered with the City of Titusville to upgrade the nutrient removal process at the Osprey Water Reclamation Plant, which is situated near Parrish Medical Center and Arthur Dunn Air Park.

The Save Our Indian River Lagoon Program was created as part of a ½ cent sales tax that Brevard County residents voted to impose on themselves in 2016 and contributed $9.1 million to the project.

The program is designed to address excess nitrogen and phosphorus pollution in the Indian River Lagoon through various projects to reduce pollution inputs, remove legacy pollution loads, and restore natural filtration systems.

The plan is estimated to bring in up to $542 million in revenue over ten years to fund projects that will reduce or remove over 1.3 million pounds of excess nitrogen and 106,000 pounds of phosphorus annually from the Indian River Lagoon.

The projects being completed by the Save Our Indian River Lagoon Program are just one part of restoring the Indian River Lagoon.

The National Estuary Program, St Johns River Water Management District, Brevard County and the cities have been working on stormwater improvements since the 1990s. Currently, new technologies are being incorporated to improve stormwater and wastewater utilities.

The lagoon will also need the community’s assistance to help reduce the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus created by homes and businesses.
