BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Eastern Florida State College team physician Dr. Bruce J. Thomas passed away on May 3 in Tampa.

Dr. Thomas was a sports medicine physician in practice with Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute and also was the team physician for Eastern Florida State College since 2003.

The Melbourne sports medicine physician worked closely with EFSC’s athletic training staff to ensure the well-being of the Titans student-athletes.

“I am devastated by the sudden passing of Dr Thomas. He was one of the first people I met when I got to Eastern Florida, he was an amazing Doctor who had time for everyone. He was a humble servant leader and one of the best Doctors I have ever worked with,” Eastern Florida State College Associate Vice President of Athletics Jeff Carr said.

“We all loved him from the coaches, student-athletes, staff, everyone. There is a definite void in Eastern Florida’s athletic department at this time. We are grieving with his family and friends, he will be sorely missed and cannot be replaced. Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with his wife Susan and his two boys.”

He earned a World Series ring with the Marlins in 1997 and the Nationals in 2019. He has served as an Olympic physician in Beijing (2008) and Tokyo.

Prior to joining Orlando Health, Dr. Thomas served as the Medical Director for Health First Sports Medicine in Melbourne.

He has served as the Head Team Physician for both the Washington Nationals and Montreal Expos Major League Baseball teams and is currently the Nationals Team Physician for Florida Operations.

Dr. Thomas is the Medical Director for the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) since 2006.

Dr. Thomas has earned numerous honors and awards for his work in sports medicine and was inducted into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

He is an associate fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the Association of Major League Baseball Team Physicians, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, and the American College of Sports Medicine.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity Wellsprings Church, 638 South Patrick Drive in Satellite Beach on Friday, May 19th at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to one of the following charities.
