BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA –The 29th annual Eastern Florida State College P.J. Wilson and Henry Scott Minority Golf Camp started this week with 96 campers learning about the game of golf as well as some other life skills.

The day began with the camp honoring Roosevelt Jackson’s wife and son. Jackson had been one of the key volunteers with the golf camp since its inception until he passed away last year.

Eastern Florida State College’s Executive Director of Community Engagement Michael Cadore thanked Jackson’s wife for all of their contributions to the community and the golf camp and she spoke to the campers and were given honorary golf balls from Cocoa High School where he helped coach that had his initials on them.

Dr. Joe Lee Smith was introduced and the former provost of all four campuses at Eastern Florida State College, formerly Brevard Community College, talked to the kids about his four keys to having a successful life.

Smith, who has been associated with the golf camp since its inception, talked about Attitude, Discipline, Determination, and Commitment.

Dr. Smith held up the sign and talked about each word and what it meant.

“A good attitude will lead to altitude – how high you can go in life depends on your attitude,” Smith told the campers.

“There isn’t anything that can stop you from being successful if you have the attitude, discipline determination, and commitment. The lesson to remember is to always tell yourself there is nothing that can stop you.” (EFSC image)

Isaac Johnson, who has also been with the camp since the beginning, talked to the campers about the camp and what to expect before they broke off into groups to begin Day 2.

“There is a lot more to learn here than hitting a golf ball, what we are trying to do is to help you get better in all aspects,” Johnson said.

The camp has a mix of volunteer coaches who help the players learn the game. Eastern Florida State College golfers Morela Boyd, Brandon Boncore, Bryan Hernandez, and Nick Miller along with coach Mike Inman and members of his Rockledge High School girls golf team. Also volunteering to help teach are Thomas Makela and Luke Nicholson.

The camp will run until June 14 with an awards ceremony on June 15.

The camp began in 1992 with the help of Henry Scott and P.J. Wilson, two African American golf professionals in Brevard County. For years it was known as the Minority Golf Camp because of its efforts to reach out to minorities, but it’s always been open to all young people.
