MEDICAL SPOTLIGHT

At Cape Canaveral Hospital on Thursday, Health First Obstetrician Dr. Vanessa Dance, right, celebrated the birth of a child she helped deliver … similar to the hundreds of previous deliveries she’s performed over the last 20 years. As Khalasia Haynes of Cocoa, above left, was preparing for discharge with her newborn baby Kialani, Khalasia’s proud mom Kamania Wilson, center, was also there to celebrate.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In one snapshot in time, all three – newborn, mom, and grandmother – took time to absorb the special gravity of what was happening.

At Cape Canaveral Hospital on Thursday, Health First Obstetrician Dr. Vanessa Dance celebrated the birth of a child she helped deliver … similar to the hundreds of previous deliveries she’s performed over the last 20 years.

But this one was just a little different.

As Khalasia Haynes of Cocoa, Florida, was preparing for discharge with her newborn baby Kialani, Khalasia’s proud mom Kamania Wilson was also there to celebrate a little more than just the birth of her grandchild. They were all part of a special moment.

About 20 years ago, Dr. Dance was Kamania’s obstetrician. She delivered Khalasia (and her siblings) at Cape Canaveral Hospital, and now she delivered the third generation of Haynes ladies into the world on Thursday, June 1.

The special moment was certainly not lost on Dr. Dance.

“This moment and celebration makes me feel really well-accomplished. You know, here in the county and our community, taking care of all my patients … and their kids … and their kids’ kids. It’s just … it was a big milestone yesterday. I just felt really different. Like no other way before,” said Dr. Vance.

Dance said she began to put two and two together weaving a historic pattern when she was seeing Khalasia and chatting during prenatal visits.

“During our prenatal visits then, when Khalasia told me who her mom was, I thought, ‘Oh, yes, I know your mom, and I’ve delivered her babies.’ And then she even told me I knew some of her friends that I had also delivered her friends. I thought, ‘Oh, gosh, this is the first time that I’m taking care of someone that I delivered who’s now having a baby herself!

That makes me feel really good because I just really love this community and my profession that I have here. So, I love it that my patients speak so highly of me to their own friends and family. It happens a lot where I say ‘I know so and so, you know, my neighbor sent me or my daughter-in-law sent me.’ It’s special and this is a connection we’ll always remember!”

New mom Khalasia recalled when everyone began to connect the dots on the soon-to-be “special delivery.”

“She (Dr. Dance) put it together a little later on, like a few months, because she was just like, ‘Hey, did I deliver you?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, you delivered all three of my mom’s kids.’ I mean, it made me feel a little bit better. You know, with her being my doctor and knowing that she delivered me and my siblings – she delivered all of us, said Khalani.

“I felt a lot more comfortable and trusting of Dr. Dance delivering my baby. And I think that’s so important and trusting, you know, who delivers your baby girl. Because, you know, you’re in a vulnerable situation and you just want to be assured that everything is going to go smoothly. I felt that way. Plus, she also delivered a lot of my friends, who she also could remember when I told her who they were.  So, I definitely felt a lot more comfortable. It makes the process a lot smoother because it just takes away a lot of worries.”

This is not Dr. Dance’s first “dance” with a historic delivery.

In 2021, she delivered a baby at Cape Canaveral who was born on March 21 (3/21) in the 321 area code … at 3:21 p.m. – a special moment that captured global media coverage.

As for Grandma, Kamania, while the unique circumstance of the moment was, of course, something special … the safe delivery of her grandchild and health of her daughter are the details she’ll most remember and hold dear.

“I’m really excited and this is really special, Kamania said. “But the biggest thing is that you just want all of them to be safe and healthy.”
