BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech women’s lacrosse midfielder and rising sophomore Phoebe Hurt is competing for Team Wales at the 2023 European Lacrosse Federation Women’s Under-21 Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
“After receiving the call that I was selected to represent Wales, there was a lot going through my mind as it is such an amazing opportunity,” said Hurt. “The call came at such a random time, and I was not expecting it. However, I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to return home and begin training.”
Team Wales was placed into Division A of the tournament for the start of round-robin games, along with England and the Czech Republic. Ireland, Scotland, Germany, and Israel comprise Division B, with Sweden, Italy, Spain, and Poland comprising Division C.
“It’s exciting as the team is starting in Division A of this tournament, as our group has some great competition. A major thing that sets us apart from the rest of the teams is that some of our teammates have already had experience playing with each other at some point, which is a massive bonus.
“Our team goal is to play how we practice and dictate our competition and have no regrets about anything from the tournament. An individual goal of mine is to help the team in any way I’m needed and to use my previous experience of playing with Team Wales to give confidence to some of our younger athletes.”
At the conclusion of the Round-Robin play, Hurt led Wales with five goals.
Wales fell to the hosts, the Czech Republic, by a score of 8-7; the close matchup saw Hurt record a hat trick.
In its second contest of the tournament, Wales matched up against England but were overwhelmed with a 12-4 loss, with Hurt recording two goals.
“It always is such an honor to put on a Wales Uniform, and to have the opportunity to compete at the European Championships is something I’m incredibly proud of.
Wales will look ahead as they advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face off against Scotland on Thursday, July 6th at 1:00 P.M. (EST), 7:00 P.M. (GMT).
In her freshman season with the Panthers, Hurt recorded three goals with one assist while tallying nine ground balls and seven draw-control wins.
