Ways to Keep Cool This Summer Without AC
By Space Coast Daily // July 11, 2023
The summer is upon us. That means trips to the beach, ice cream breaks, and endless amounts of sweltering heat. If you have in-home air conditioning, you’re probably planning to blast it all season long.
But if you don’t – and many of us belong to this group – you might be stressing about how you’re going to make it through the long, hot summer months.
Fret not. Here are five trusty strategies to turn to when the sun gets too hot, and there’s no respite at home.
Take a Breeze Break
Contrary to popular belief, movement is actually good for heat overload. Don’t do a set of jumping jacks or run a marathon. But getting up and moving around if you’re working from home or planning on lounging all day will help you cool down. The best way to get air on your skin is by taking a breeze break.
Whether you step out on the patio for some WAKA Vaping, to check your social media feeds, or just for some silent me time, a breeze break is a great way to beat the heat.
Go to the Beach
You probably don’t need to be told to go to the beach this summer, but we’ll join the chorus anyway. If you don’t live near a coastline, there’s bound to be a pond or a lake or some kind of swimmable-size water feature nearby. When you see record highs in the forecast, it’s time to plan a beach day.
Visit a Botanical Garden
A recent study of 20,000 people showed that those who spend at least two hours a week in green spaces, like botanical gardens, are more likely to report good psychological and physical health than those who don’t.
Botanical gardens are great places to escape the summer sun. They offer plentiful shade, lots of open space to catch the breeze, and often are dotted with snack bars and cooling stations throughout where you can enjoy an iced tea or frozen drink. Plus, all that fresh oxygen will have you breathing deep and relaxing.
Catch a Matinee
Movie theaters are a great low-cost way to get cool and stay entertained. Go back to the years of your youth when you used to hit the multiplex and stay for two, three, even four movies. That pristine air conditioning will have you never wanting to leave.
Drink Lots of Ice Water
Drinking water is a great way to regulate your internal body temperature. Simply put: if you’re too hot on the outside, it’s likely because you’re too hot on the inside. Summer is not the time for soup, hot wings, and fresh cups of coffee. Throw ice in absolutely everything you can.
Not only is drinking ice water a great way to regulate internal body temperature, it has proven health benefits. One study found that drinking lots of ice water can actually lower your blood pressure.
Staying Cool and Collected
Keep calm, and hide from the heat. This summer, don’t let it win. Stay cool and stay happy.
