BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Tropical Storm Lee was upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane on Wednesday in the 5 p.m. report released by the National Hurricane Center.
Hurricane Lee is now expected to pick up rapid strength in the next 24-48 hours as conditions are favorable in the area where it continues to churn.
Lee is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph and this motion is expected to continue for the next few days with a slight reduction in forward speed over the weekend.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph with higher gusts.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles.
The estimated minimum central pressure is 991 mb (29.27 inches).
Swells generated by Hurricane Lee are expected to reach portions of the Lesser Antilles on Friday, and reach the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this weekend.
These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
The next complete report will be released at 11 p.m.
