Aoyagi has not let up more than one goal in a match all season
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech senior goalkeeper Ayana Aoyagi was named the Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the Panthers’ 1-1 draw against No. 5 Embry-Riddle this past week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
This is the second time that Aoyagi has earned the award in her career and this season. She was also named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11 of this season.
On Wednesday against No. 5 Embry-Riddle, Aoyagi made a terrific diving save in just the first minute of the match. Then after giving up a goal in the 20th minute, helped captain her defense to not allow any more shots in the rest of the first half.
The Australian native continued to bolster her backline, and made four saves in the second half, including back-to-back saves in the 87th minute to hold the game to a 1-1 draw.
Aoyagi’s five saves matched a career-high for her, which was set earlier this season against then-No. 2 Embry-Riddle that saw the Panthers also earn a 1-1 draw.
Aoyagi has not let up more than one goal in a match all season and holds a 0.53 goals-against-average, which is second-best in the SSC.
The women’s soccer team is back in action at home with an SSC match against Barry on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Rick Stottler Field.
