BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Eastern Florida State College will host the sixth annual Jim Grimes Classic this weekend at Titan Field House on the Melbourne campus.
The men’s basketball tournament will begin Friday evening with two games beginning at 5 p.m. and then two games on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
Jim Grimes was the associate head coach of the men’s basketball team for the 2012-2013 season before taking over the women’s program on March 18, 2013.
In his three-plus seasons as the women’s coach, Grimes led them to Southern Conference titles in 2014-15 and 2015-16, earning trips to the NJCAA Region 8/ FCSAA Tournament in both seasons.
He passed away at the age of 45 on Jan. 29, 2017.
“This tournament is near and dear to my heart, Jim Grimes was my first assistant coach here and then was a successful women’s basketball coach before passing away way too early and leaving behind four young girls. To be able to continue to honor his name with one of our classics is very special to me,” Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball coach Jeremy Shulman said.
“I miss him, we all miss him he was an incredible man, an incredible father, and an incredible coach. It’s a special weekend.”
Florida State College at Jacksonville, led by head coach John Putryski who was also an assistant under Shulman, will open the tournament against East Georgia State College at 5 p.m. Friday.
The Titans will take the floor at 7 p.m. against Time to Ball Prep.
Then on Saturday FSC-Jacksonville will play Time to Ball Prep at 2 p.m. with the Titans facing East Georgia State College at 4 p.m.
