TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet voted unanimously to induct Brevard County’s veteran advocate and retired U.S. Army Captain Donn Weaver into the Class of 2023 Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame.
Gov. DeSantis formally recognized Weaver during a ceremony on November 14 in Tallahassee. Weaver served in the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division from 1968 to 1972 and was in the DMZ from 1969 to 1970.
The State of Florida established the Florida Veterans’ Hall of Fame in 2013 to recognize and honor those military veterans who, through their works and lives during or after military service, have made a significant contribution to the State of Florida.
In selecting its nominees for submission to the Governor and Cabinet, the individuals they choose have made a significant contribution to the state in civic, business, public service, or other pursuits.
Weaver, a leading advocate for veterans, is a former president of the Good Deed Foundation of the Military Officers Association of America, Cape Canaveral chapter.
The goal of the GDF is to help support active duty military and family, ROTC/JROTC and other units, and veterans needing special assistance on the Space Coast.
Weaver is currently the Chairman of the Brevard Veterans Council and vice president of the Veterans Memorial Center in Merritt Island.
He wrote and received a $2 million grant to upgrade the Veterans Center, and as a result, a new wing and museum were created. Weaver is now working with the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency to create an amphitheater and other usable facilities in the park adjacent to the Veteran Center Building.
Weaver is a member of the Brevard Veterans Resource Network, Florida Congressman Jim Posey’s Advisory Committee, Brevard County American Legion Post 344 and VFW Post 10139.
He is also an honorary member of the Military Order of Purple Heart due to the death of his son, 1st Lt. Todd W. Weaver, in Afghanistan in 2010. Weaver actively supports its members in order to “live up to his son’s legacy.”
