National Hurricane Center Issues Hurricane Warning for Florida Gulf Coast as Tropical Storm Debby Forms

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – National Hurricane Center has issued a Hurricane Warning for portions of the Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday as Tropical Storm ‘Debby’ moves into the Gulf of Mexico Saturday afternoon.

The system is expected to pick up strength as it continues through the Gulf, which has conditions ripe for rapid intensification in the next 24-36 hours.

Currently, the system is a tropical storm carrying 40 mph max sustained winds and moving toward the west-northwest near 15 mph.

RAINFALL POTENTIAL


A turn toward the northwest is forecast today, followed by a northward motion on Sunday and then a slower northeastward motion Sunday night and Monday. On the forecast track, the center
of the depression will move across western Cuba this morning, and then move over the eastern Gulf of Mexico later today and Sunday, reaching the Florida Gulf coast late Sunday or Monday.

The system is expected to be near hurricane strength when it reaches the Florida Gulf coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency for the following counties: Alachua, Baker, Bay, Bradford, Brevard, Calhoun, Charlotte, Citrus, Clay, Collier, Columbia, DeSoto, Dixie, Duval, Escambia, Flagler, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Glades, Gulf, Hamilton, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Lee, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Madison, Manatee, Marion, Monroe, Nassau, Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Santa Rosa, Sarasota, Seminole, St. Johns, Sumter, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, Volusia, Wakulla, Walton, and Washington counties.
