Florida State Troopers are investigating a fatal crash that shut down northbound Interstate 95 just south of State Road 46 on Friday. The incident unfolded when a driver involved in an initial crash exited his vehicle and was struck by two passing vehicles.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A 33-year-old Port St. Lucie man was killed and a 27-year-old Dallas, North Carolina, woman was critically injured early Friday after a series of three linked crashes on northbound Interstate 95 just south of State Road 46, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Troopers say the incident began at 12:08 a.m. near mile marker 223 when a 2019 Chevrolet Impala, driven by the Port St. Lucie man, changed lanes from the center to the outside lane, entering the path of a 2024 Volkswagen driven by a 45-year-old Weston man.

The Impala’s front right corner struck the Volkswagen’s left rear, causing the Volkswagen to veer into a roadside ditch. The Impala then swerved onto the inside shoulder, hit the concrete median, and became disabled in the inside northbound lane. The driver exited his vehicle and stood beside it.

Moments later, a 2025 Hyundai Elantra and a 2019 Audi A4 approached the disabled Impala in the inside lane. Investigators say the Hyundai attempted to swerve left to avoid the disabled vehicle but still struck it, then continued forward and hit the Impala’s driver, throwing him down the roadway. The trailing Audi also swerved but was unable to avoid hitting the man.

A female motorist from North Carolina, identified as a 27-year-old Dallas resident, stopped to render aid.

As she attempted to help, a 2010 Nissan Murano traveling in the center lane swerved left to avoid her, but struck her despite her attempt to move out of the way.

The original driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been notified.

The Volkswagen driver was taken to Parrish Medical Center with minor injuries. The drivers of the Hyundai, Audi, and Nissan, along with a 28-year-old passenger in the Nissan, were not injured and remained at the scene.

The Good Samaritan was airlifted to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital in critical but stable condition.

All drivers involved in the crashes were wearing seatbelts, FHP noted.

The roadway remained closed for an extended period during the ongoing investigation.
