From Puerto Rico to Palm Bay: Retired Officer Continues Giving Back

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA — Community service has been a defining thread throughout Orlando Berdecia’s life.
After retiring from the police force in Puerto Rico, he continued to dedicate himself to helping others, serving as the volunteer Deputy Director of Emergency Management in Toa Alta and as a volunteer firefighter.
“Community service has always been a part of my life,” Berdecia said. “Joining the VCOPs allows me to continue giving back to the community in a meaningful way.”
Today, Berdecia brings that same commitment to the Palm Bay Police Department as a valued member of the Volunteers in Police Service (VCOP).
Berdecia joined the VCOPs in August 2024 as part of the patrol staff, where he patrols neighborhoods twice a week alongside a partner.
Their work includes neighborhood and commercial property checks, VIN inspections, found property pick-ups, house checks, courier runs, and vehicle transports. He also provides critical traffic support for accidents, disabled vehicles, downed power lines, special events, and school crossings.
Beyond his scheduled patrols, Berdecia is part of the VCOP call-out team, responding to non-duty-hour emergencies.
He assists with routine fleet maintenance, radar-trailer deployments, and fills in on patrols as needed. His dedication ensures the safety and security of Palm Bay’s residents while supporting law enforcement efforts across the community.
Outside of VCOP duties, Berdecia and his wife—a retired paramedic and university instructor—actively participate in their church and local community. The couple shares their home with Bruno, their dog, and Oliver, their cat.
In his personal time, Berdecia enjoys collecting Hot Wheels, tinkering with motor vehicles, playing the saxophone, operating a HAM radio, and participating in SKYWARN emergency communications.
