A driver was killed following a two-vehicle crash Thursday night on South Babcock Street, according to the Melbourne Police Department.
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — A Palm Bay man has been arrested on DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges more than two months after a fatal crash on South Babcock Street claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman, according to the Melbourne Police Department.
The crash occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on April 30 near the intersection of South Babcock Street and University Boulevard. Melbourne police responded after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a serious traffic crash.
When officers arrived, they found one vehicle overturned in the roadway and another resting on the sidewalk after leaving the road.
According to the initial investigation, a Ford F-350 traveling southbound on South Babcock Street crossed the median into the northbound lanes and collided with a 2016 Kia Soul.
Brevard County Fire Rescue transported the driver of the Kia, later identified as Alcenta Castro-King, 22, of Palm Bay, to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the Ford F-350 was identified as Cody Nicholas Harrington, 19, of Palm Bay.
The crash forced the closure of all lanes of traffic in the area for several hours while investigators processed the scene.
Following the collision, the Melbourne Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit launched an extensive traffic homicide investigation that included months of follow-up work, witness interviews, video review and forensic evidence analysis.
As a result of the investigation, detectives developed probable cause to charge Harrington in connection with the fatal crash.
On July 3, investigators obtained an arrest warrant charging Harrington with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
Harrington turned himself in at the Brevard County Jail on Monday, July 6, where he was booked on both charges.
The Melbourne Police Department said the investigation remains active.
