BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Investigators are probing an incident this afternoon in Melbourne in which a teen was shot.

Melbourne Police Department spokesman Sgt. Sheridan Shelley said officers responding to gunfire about 3 p.m. near the Hopkins Place Apartments at 3000 Monroe Street found a 14-year-old girl who had been grazed in the back by a bullet.

The girl was treated at the scene for the wound and then departed the area with a family member.

Witnesses told police they heard several shots fired in the incident.

On June 20, 22-year-old Kaper R. Williams, who lived in Apartment 5 of the complex,  was shot and killed in the apartments’ parking lot in the early morning hours.

Melbourne detectives are investigating the death of Williams as a homicide and it is not known if today’s shooting was related to that murder.
