Generous Walmart Gift Allows Program Expansion

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Thanks to a generous donation from Walmart, the annual “Shop With A Cop” program offered by the Melbourne Police Department was able to serve even more children this Christmas.

Walmart’s donation to the program was four times the amount the company donated in 2011, allowing the police department’s to assist 58 children from 21 families this holiday season.
On Thursday night while accompanied by Melbourne police officers, children with $50 gift cards stroll the aisles of the Melbourne Walmart selected their very own gifts.
The participating children, who were recommended to the program by local schools, churches and community organizations, were not the only ones who benefited from the “Shop With a Cop” program.
“Officers look forward to the event each year,” said Officer Jennifer Amneus, one of the event organizers. “It is a humbling and heartwarming experience to give back to the community and see the excitement and joy we bring to the kids.”
Assisting families who are facing financial hardships during the holiday season is the main reason why the Melbourne Police Department hosts “Shop With A Cop,” but the event also allows the participating children to interact with law enforcement officers in a positive setting.
“It’s really nice to see the community and police department working hand in hand,” said Office Nicole Chapman, another event organizer. “We’ve built some really positive relationships over the years.”
