BCC Women Drop 14th Straight Basketball Game

Titans Now 2-17 Overall
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Once again the Brevard Community College women’s basketball team let a first-half lead slip away because of poor shooting and execution and once again the Titans lost, falling 75-52 to Palm Beach State College on Tuesday in the Melbourne Campus gym.
The loss was BCC’s 14th straight and dropped the Lady Titans to 2-17 overall and 0-4 in the Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference.
Palm Beach improved to 12-5 overall and 4-0 in conference.
BCC led 21-16 with 5 minutes and 18 seconds to play in the first half after holding Palm Beach to just eight points for the first 7:34.
But the visitors rallied to lead 27-23 at the half. And they didn’t stop there.
Palm Beach sprinted to a 10-point lead, 33-23, in the first two minutes of the second half and it was never close again. BCC, playing without injured co-captain and leading scorer Shanceece Stephens, didn’t crack the 30-point mark until 13:53 remained to be played. By then it was 45-31.
And Palm Beach boosted the lead to 53-33 mostly on the strength of its free-throw shooting. The Panthers were 25-for-34 from the line while BCC was 12-for-12.
Also, the Panthers’ decided height advantage inside with three players at 6 feet or over was too much for BCC to handle.
“I don’t get it,” BCC head coach Renee Bellamy said. “It’s mental, a lot of this is mental. We talk about this in practice: ‘When you get in the game you have to be mentally prepared.'”
As for playing without Stephens: “You got the best player out the game it’s going to make a big difference. But we’ve got to learn to play without her too because there’s a possibility we may have to. Other people have got to step up.”
Sophomore co-captain Kasie Berry led BCC with 12 points while freshman Nuri Muhammad added 10.
Palm Beach put four players in double figures led by sophomore Laquandra Brazil with 22. Sophomore Annessa De La Cruz, sophomore Sharneka McCatty and 6-3 freshman center Alana Arias scored 12 points apiece.
Next up for BCC is a Saturday game at Miami-Dade which was 4-14 overall and 0-3 in conference heading into Tuesday’s game against Broward College.
BCC returns home to face conference-leading St. Petersburg College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23.
