BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A confrontation escalated Friday when one man pulled a knife and injured another man in West Melbourne.

West Melbourne Police Public Information  Officer Lt. Richard Cordeau said the incident happened near Wingate Boulevard and Vandiver Way on Friday afternoon.

“During the altercation one of the men brandished a large pocket knife and subsequently cut the other subject involved,” Cordeau said.

The injured man was transported to a local hospital and underwent surgery for injuries to his forearm and shin.

Cordeau said the injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

There were several witnesses to the incident and West Melbourne Police detectives are conducting interviews and an investigation is ongoing.

Cordeau said preliminary information indicates it is a case of self-defense and it appears criminal charges will not be filed.

“Detectives will forward the case to the Office of the State Attorney who will ultimately decide if criminal charges are warranted, ” Cordeau said.
