BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Civic Theatre season drawled to a start with a production of Steel Magnolias, written by Robert Harling and produced and directed by Peg Girard.
A recent fundraiser, put on by Girls and Boys Raised in the South, was wrapped around a performance and featured a delightful supper: shrimp ‘n grits, fried green tomatoes, sugar bacon tarts, chicken salad tarts, meatloaf sliders, honey ham sliders, pimento cheese spread, and sausage casserole prepared and served by The Green Turtle.
At intermission, homemade desserts, provided by the Southern Sweeties, included pecan tassies, mini cheesecake tarts, key lime tarts, South Carolina chews, cheese straws and mini moon pies.
Steel Magnolias is set in a home-based beauty parlor in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where the lives of six distinctly different women interweave via the small town gossip that shadows the unending cycle of birth, marriage and death.
M’Lynn is played by Rita Moreno and Shelby is played by Amber Prine. Brenda Sheets is Truvy, and Jessica Taylor plays Annelle. Linda Lawson plays Clairee and Deb Pitcher is Ouiser.
This beautiful little theater is located at 817 East New Haven Avenue in Downtown Melbourne. It has turned into a wonderful party space thanks to the expanded lobby on the Strawbridge Avenue side. (See map below)
