BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — When school opens next week throughout Brevard County, Palm Bay patrol officers will be conducting targeted enforcement at all area school zones and will be watching to make sure motorists obey the traffic rules pertaining to school bus stops.
School crossing guards wearing bright yellow traffic vests will also be helping children cross high traffic corridors and will be in these school zones before and after school hours throughout the year.

“We just want to remind everyone to pay attention and drive safely,” said Chief Doug Muldoon.
“We will have all available manpower watching our school zones and bus stops because we want to make sure our children are safe as well as the motoring public.”
Florida motor vehicle laws require that motorists stop upon approaching any school bus which displays its flashing red lights and has its stop signs extended. The fine for passing a stopped school bus is a $274. Passing a stopped school bus on the loading side is a mandatory court appearance and a fine of up to $500.
The offender must, in addition to other applicable penalties, attend a Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle (DHSMV) approved driver improvement course.
Speeding in a school zone will also be strictly enforced. Around most Florida schools the speed limit is posted at 20 mph. Fines for speeding in these school zones are doubled. Depending on the violation speeding in a school zone could cost the violator more than $500.
