BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday that Sheriff Wayne Ivey had the honor of being appointed to the Florida Model Jail Standards Commission by the Florida Sheriff’s Association.

The appointment comes as Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford departs the board as he is retiring from office at the end of June.

The Florida Model Jail Standards are the established standards, which jails across the state of Florida must meet to ensure that the constitutional rights of those incarcerated are upheld.

Prior to 1996, the Florida Department of Corrections was responsible for the standards and inspection process for local county jails. Legislation was enacted in 1996 which provided the authority of the inspections.

As a result, the Florida Sheriff’s Association and Florida Association of Counties now appoint individuals to serve on a committee that governs standards that local jails must comply.

Corrections is one of the most important components of our Criminal Justice System and I look forward to helping develop standards and best practices for local facilities throughout our state,” said Sheriff Wayne Ivey.
