BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE FLORIDA – Eastern Florida golfer Mickey DeMorat shot a one-under 70 Thursday in the second round of the Southern Amateur to make the 36-hole cut with a 143.

DeMorat’s Eastern Florida teammate Kerry Sweeney soared to a 79 and missed the cut.

Rising sophomore DeMorat shot 73 on Wednesday and classmate Sweeney 74.

DeMorat is eight strokes off the lead.

The 109th Southern Amateur Golf Championship is being held at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.

Play in the 72-hole tournament continues through Saturday.

The tournament field includes players from 20 states and five foreign countries.
