Launch Federal Credit Union Issues Breech Alert To Members Using Debit Cards

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Launch Federal Credit Union issued a breech alert to its members after stolen debit card numbers were used for purchases, primarily at Walmart stores in amounts of $50 or less. 

Following is Launch Federal Credit Union’s warning to its members:

Launch FCU is committed to protecting your personal and financial information.

As part of this commitment, we wanted to inform you that we have become aware of fraud involving some Launch FCU debit cards. It is suspected that the compromise was at a local merchant that we are currently trying to identify. In particular, our members in the Titusville and Merritt Island areas are being affected.

Stolen debit card numbers are being used for purchases primarily at Walmart stores in amounts of $50 or less. Since most merchants do not require a signature for purchases of $50 or less, the individuals perpetrating the fraud are not required to sign for these purchases, nor are they required to enter a PIN (Personal Identification Number).

Our fraud team has discovered that other credit unions are experiencing similar fraud with debit card transactions under $50.

In order to prevent further transaction fraud, you will be required to either sign or enter your PIN for any transaction, regardless of the dollar amount. If you have a $50 or less transaction that you do not enter a PIN or sign for, it may be denied. Transactions over $50 using a PIN or signature should go through as usual.

Please monitor your accounts on a regular basis to ensure there are no unauthorized charges on your debit card. You can do this by logging into your account online if you are signed up for online banking, or you can use VoiceTouch24 from your telephone.

If you are not signed up for either of these, feel free to contact our Call Center at 321-455-9400 or 800-662-5257 and choose option 3.

Please report any fraudulent charges immediately to us by calling either of these telephone numbers. If fraud is confirmed, your debit card will be immediately canceled, and a new one will be ordered. Launch FCU will reimburse our members for any fraud on their accounts
