Dick and Joan Flutie, the parents of former football star and Brevard County resident Doug Flutie, both died within an hour of each other on Wednesday.

Flutie issued this statement on Facebook Wednesday afternoon on behalf of his family:

It is with a heavy heart that I am making this statement. This morning my family experienced the tragic loss of my father, Dick and mother, Joan. My Dad had been ill and died of a heart attack in the hospital and my Mom, less than an hour later had a sudden heart attack and passed away.

Flutie, one of Brevard County’s most famous athletes, won the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award in college, won Pro Bowl and NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors and was voted the best CFL player of all time. He was inducted into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
