Brevard Assistant State Attorney Michael Hunt Named Prosecutor of the Year

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Please join the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in congratulating Assistant State Attorney Michael Hunt, a 37-year advocate for crime victims, as recipient of the 2016 Outstanding Prosecutor of the Year Award by the Statewide Prosecutors Association.

Michael prosecuted both felony and misdemeanor cases before his selection as Felony Intake Division Chief 28 years ago.

In that position, he has lead a team of attorneys who make critical decisions on whether sufficient cause exists for a criminal charge in what has been more than 7,000 cases per year in Brevard County.

He has also conducted more than 325 Grand Jury proceedings during which defendants face murder or other extremely serious charges.

Michael has served as a valued and trusted resource for the law enforcement community no matter the time of day or night throughout the extent of his career and his decisions have been extremely accurate and professional in representing justice.

Over the years, Michael has remained in contact with many of the crime victims he has served; he has had defendants confess to him; and, he is warmly regarded by criminal justice professionals from support staff to Judges.

The Gene C. Berry Award naming the Outstanding Prosecutor is given annually in memory of a Prosecutor from Florida’s west coast who was gunned down in the doorway of his home in 1982 by the wife of a man he sent to prison on drug charges.

A plaque bearing the names of the yearly recipients hangs in the governor’s office. Two prosecutors from the Eighteenth Circuit have been previous recipients of the award: Assistant State Attorney Tom Hastings in 2003 and Assistant State Attorney Chris White in 2011.

Michael is an outstanding Assistant State Attorney and valued Public Servant. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is very proud of Michael’s prestigious recognition and is honored to call him and the entire State Attorney’s Office team our partners.
