VIDEO: White Christmas in the Sunshine State? Only If It’s the Sand on the Beach
By Space Coast Daily // December 22, 2017
EXTENDED 14-DAY NEW YEAR'S DAY FORECAST
ABOVE VIDEO: Meteorologist Felicia Combs talks about the setup that allowed snow to fall as far south as Miami back in 1977.
(NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE) — If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, you’ll need to head northward.
The only “white Christmas” we will see is out at the beach.
Snow in central Florida isn’t totally out the question during the winter months.
On January 24, 2003, a plume of Arctic air produced widespread record low temperatures and light snow flurries in Brevard County. The snow is described as ocean effect snow, identical to lake effect snow in that it occurs due to very cold air passing over relatively warm water temperatures.
The snow reaches as far south as Fort Pierce.

On January 8-9 in 2010, light snow also fell in parts of central Florida, which briefly accumulated slightly in parts of Marion County. Sleet was widespread and snow was isolated across the Orlando area, Tampa and also in Melbourne.
Isolated flurries were even reported as from West Palm Beach to as far south as Kendall and sleet in a few spots in the South Florida metropolitan area for only the second time in record history and the first time since 1977.
But on Monday, Christmas Day, temperatures in Florida are expected to be in the upper 60s to mid 70s.
