Which Takeaway Food Is Most Popular Across the Globe?
By Space Coast Daily // August 27, 2020
The world loves takeaway food – and for a good reason. Not only can you enjoy restaurant-quality food from the comfort of your home, but it also provides a large amount of convenience. You don’t have to cook or go outside; food is simply delivered to your door upon request.
The level of convenience has been particularly pertinent in recent months. As the lockdown and other restrictions have limited restaurant visits and shopping trips, a lot of people have embraced the takeaway culture.
While the popularity of takeaway, in general, has increased, there’s one question that requires answering: What takeaway food is most popular worldwide?
Pizza
Is it really a surprise that pizza is top of the list?
Based on in-depth research carried out by Betway, who have analyzed recent search trends, pizza is the undisputed king of takeaway foods. Of the 81 countries that had data available, 55 searched for pizza more than any other food.
Eastern European countries like Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia were especially hungry for slices of cheesy goodness. Of course, pizza’s popularity is nothing new.
It is already a global cuisine that is enjoyed by pretty much everyone barring vegans, which means you won’t struggle to find pizza shops wherever you go.
In addition to local pizza joints, there’s also the factor of major global chains such as Domino’s and Papa Johns. You only have to look at the popularity of Pizza Hut in the United States.
According to the aforementioned research for between March and May of this year, Pizza Hut received an average of 1.83 million searches each month in the USA.
Chinese
The second most popular choice is another that shouldn’t come as a shock. Chinese food is savored across the planet, and that is why it is number one for 11 different countries – including big hitters like the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, and China.
As for why Chinese food is so popular, it can be attributed to the diverse and tasty menu that is usually served up. Plus, while people can quickly cook a pizza or burger without much trouble, recreating an authentic Chinese meal at home is a different story.
Sushi
Unlike the other two picks, sushi might well be a surprising inclusion on this list. Nevertheless, there are numerous countries which love to eat fresh fish – and not feel the consequences of consuming a greasy and overly fatty meal!
When you think about the country which searches for sushi the most, your mind will inevitably wander towards Japan. After all, it is regarded as the world’s sushi capital. However, Japan only came in third place as the country that searched for sushi the most (per capita).
In fact, the cuisine was most popular with Denmark between March and May. Admittedly this shouldn’t be too unexpected. Denmark is a country known for feasting on raw, smoked, and pickled fish. As a result, sushi is a suitable replacement when it comes to takeaway food.
